2021 Queen Elizabeth II Charles Babbage 50p Gold Proof Coin
Released to coincide with the 150th anniversary of his death, the fourth coin in the Royal Mint Innovation in Science series commemorates the life and legacy of one of Britain’s greatest minds
Charles Babbage KH FRS (26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) English born mathematician considered by many as the father of the computer. Most note for his pioneering work on mechanical calculating machines such as the Difference Engine, and Analytical Engine. Although neither machine were finished within Babbage's life time, a team at the London Science Museum did successful construct the Difference Engine from the original plans and it was proven to work exactly as Babbage had envisaged.
Although modern computers employ electronic technology the method for calculating is still based on the mathematical principles employed by Charles Babbage in his mechanical machines.
