1989 500th Anniversary Double Sovereign - Boxed / COA
Issued to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the first Gold Sovereign of 1489, the 1989 Double Sovereign features a one-year-only commemorative design by Bernard Sindall, replacing the traditional St George and the Dragon reverse. The obverse depicts Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II seated in King Edward's Chair, inspired by her Coronation in 1953, while the reverse combines the Royal Arms with the Tudor Rose in tribute to the original Tudor sovereign.
With a limited issue of just 2,000 pieces, the 1989 Gold Proof Double Sovereign is considerably scarcer than the standard Proof Sovereign of the same year. Offered complete in its original Royal Mint presentation case with numbered certificate, it remains one of the key modern commemorative sovereign issues.
